Minors League
Canterbury Ice Hockey Association's Minors is for players under 18 years of age. We offer four age-based leagues for youth hockey, shown below.

In High School? We offer a High School League in the winter. Players can do both High School and age-based leagues.

Experienced and competitive? Players can play in the leagues below and also try out for a Canterbury Representative Team and compete against other regional teams in New Zealand.

Under-9 (Super League)

The coed U9 league is open to age-eligible players with ability level beyond Learn To Play. Through fun, engaging, and active games and exercises, U9s learn hockey fundamentals such as skating, controlling a puck, passing, and shooting.
U9 operates all year round during the four school terms. Players can attend two training sessions per week and play a cross-ice game on the weekend. In the regular (winter) season in 2021, CIHA plans to introduce a "Super League", where players are assigned to a superhero-themed team, and provided with jerseys to match!

Under-12 (Super League)

The coed U12 league is open to age-eligible players with ability level beyond Learn To Play. Focus is on small area games in order to increase the number of puck touches and quickly advance a player's abilities and understanding of team play, rules, and sportsmanship.

Under-15 (Bantam League)

The coed non-checking U15 league has players with a range of ability levels, from those new to the game to skilled players with years of experience. We structure sessions to enable players to develop at the pace that's right for them. Ice sessions are focused on skill development through fun and engaging activities, but with an increasing focus on team play.
U15s typically have one practice per week in Term 1 (Feb-Apr). In Terms 2 and 3 (May-Sep), there is typically one practice per week and one refereed game on the weekend.

Under-18 (Midget League)

The coed U18 league is a a full-contact checking league and most players have played hockey for several years. Continued enjoyment in this age range often stems from increased intensity of practices and games, as well as a heightened sense of competition and achievement.
U18s typically have one practice per week in Term 1 (Feb-Apr). In Terms 2 and 3 (May-Sep), there is typically one practice per week and one refereed game on the weekend.

High School League

The coed non-checking High School League is for players of all abilities who are attending High School. This league has an emphasis on camaraderie, sportsmanship, and fun. The number of players in each school varies from year to year, and a player attending a school that is not fielding its own team will be able to join another team.
Practices include all high school players. For scrimmages, players will be assigned to a mixed-high school team for each school term. For league games, players will play for their regular high school team (or a combined team if their high school has too few players to field a team).
