CIHA General Manager Position Opening

The Canterbury Ice Hockey Association (CIHA) is inviting applications for its first full-time, paid General Manager (GM) position. A summary of the role is provided below and a full position description is here.

Role 

As the CIHA GM, you will take the lead across a wide range of club activities and play a central role in increasing member satisfaction and advancing the growth and success of the club, including Learn to Play, Youth, and Adult leagues and programs. This is a fantastic opportunity for a driven, community-minded individual to make ice hockey a central part of their career—with genuine potential for growth and progression as the club continues to develop. While full-time, this role offers flexible working hours to best support club activities and events, including evening and weekend commitments.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee all club programs, including Learn to Play, Youth, and Adult leagues

  • Respond to enquiries, address concerns, and maintain open communication with members and volunteers

  • Develop and manage playing schedules, and facilitate player registrations

  • Recruit, organise, and support volunteers including game officials, managers, and coaches

  • Lead the planning and delivery of youth and adult Learn to Play sessions and cultivate a strong pipeline of new players

  • Identify charitable funding opportunities, submit applications, and manage reporting to support club operations and advancement

  • Maintain equipment inventory and oversee gear hire processes

  • Collaborate with the Committee on monthly reporting, budgeting, and club development

Competencies and Experience
  • Strong leadership, organisation, and time management skills

  • A confident, clear, and approachable communicator who works well with people of all ages and thrives in a collaborative environment

  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and ensure smooth operations

  • Tech-savvy and comfortable with office software (Excel, Google Sheets), and open to learning specialised tools such as eSportsDesk and Xero for managing registrations and budgeting

  • Calm, reliable, and adaptable when things get busy or plans change

  • Ideally, have solid ice hockey knowledge and a passion for the sport, with a desire to stay informed on best practices and training programs

  • Experience working with volunteers, sports clubs, or community programs is highly valued​
